How Catch-Up Contributions Work

From 1 July 2018, if you don't use your full concessional contribution cap in a year, the unused amount carries forward for up to 5 years. Here's what you need to know:

1

TSB Must Be Under $500,000

Your Total Super Balance at 30 June of the previous year must be under this threshold to access catch-up.

2

5-Year Window

Unused caps can only be carried forward for 5 years. Older unused amounts expire.

3

Oldest First

When you contribute, the oldest unused caps are used first before the current year's cap.

4

Started 2018-19

Catch-up only applies to unused caps from 2018-19 onwards. Earlier years don't count.

Accuracy Note: Whilst every effort has been made to provide current and accurate information, I am only one person and there's a very good chance that I'll miss something. If you spot a factual error, or if a calculator breaks or gives incorrect answers, I'd be really grateful if you could let me know via the Contact Us page so I can fix it ASAP.

It would speed up the correction process enormously if you could cite for me the title of the page where you find the error and describe what the error is. Thanks heaps for your support in keeping this valuable resource up to date for everyone's benefit.
